New 4G mobile networks’ TV interference will cost £180million

A fund has been set up to collect the money from mobile companies who are bidding for 4G mobile spectrum, Communications Minister Ed Vaizey said today.

The new networks, which are already common in other countries, will allow home broadband speeds to be delivered to mobile phones, but will cause some interference to existing TV signals.

Most users will be able to switch from, for instance, satellite to digital television, or fit a filter. Help will be provided for the elderly or disabled.… Read more

UK Could see 4G rollout this year

Everything Everywhere (EE) is planning a 4G rollout by the end of the year, provided OFCOM approve the process.

EE, who owns Orange and T-Mobile, announced that 4G testing on the 1800Mhz spectrum will commence in Bristol this April and will be ready to launch the 4G service in the 4th quarter. CEO of EE, Olaf Swantee, would not comment on how far the commercial roll-out would extend at launch, but did say that intially it would be relatively small scale, focused on 4G Dongles and 4G-enabled smartphones.… Read more

Next Apple products rumoured to be 4G LTE enabled – do we care?

While the world waits with baited breath for the imminent announcement of Apple’s iPad3 and later in the year, the iPhone 5. The question on everyone’s lips is will these devices be 4G LTE enabled.

EU Demands 4G Broadband Spectrum Be In Place By January 2013

New rulings from the European Parliament have placed new urgency on the allocation of 4G services, telling member nations that they must have “authorised the use” of the two main 4G spectrums by January 1st 2013.

The EU’s guidelines on the matter specifically refer to the 800MHz spectrum, saying: “By 1 January 2013, all Member States (unless an individual exemption has been obtained before that date), should have authorised the use of the 800 MHz band for wireless broadband communications.”… Read more
