BBC iPlayer usage figures highlight the need for 4G

BBC’s latest figures on iPlayer usage has shown a 94% increase in mobile users in the past 12 months.

The reports details that in April 2011, iPlayer was accessed eight millions times from mobile devices. That figure rose to 15 million times in April 2012. That’s a total of 15% of all programme requests to iPlayer coming from mobile devices.

BBC iPlayer has a wide demographic range using TV and Radio catch-up services so can be used as an accurate representation of the browsing habits of UK users.… Read more

Ofcom publish responses to EE’s 4G proposition

On the 8th May 2012, Ofcom’s consultation on Everything Everywhere’s (EE) application to launch 4G services early on the 1800MHz spectrum closed.

Today, Ofcom have published the responses to the application, in particular, responses from Vodafone and Telefonica (the parent company of O2). Ofcom have said that the responses raise a number of detailed issues that they must now consider carefully. They go on to say they will publish a statement on the proposal “as early as possible”.

O2 to roll out 42Mbps 3G

O2 has confirmed they are rolling out an advanced 3G service to Major UK cities.

The DC-HSPA connection can support speeds of up to 42Mbps. This will still be classed as a 3G connection ahead of of the 4G roll out.

We see this as good news, although, as stated, the upgrade will only take place in major UK cities. Local masts will need to be upgraded and O2 have not confirmed exact locations as yet.

The good news for iPad owners is that the new speeds are supported on the new iPad but of course they will need to be in an area that has had the upgrade to benefit.… Read more
